Connect Your Bank

Instead of typing every transaction in by hand, you can connect your bank and let Tally import them automatically. Connections go through Stripe Financial Connections: you log in at your own bank, inside Stripe’s secure window — Tally never sees your bank credentials, account number, or routing number, only your transaction history and current balance. Manual entry keeps working exactly as before on any account, connected or not.

Bank sync is part of Tally Plus — the free tier is manual tracking only. See Pricing for what’s included in each plan.

There are a few ways in; they all run the same flow:

  • On the Accounts page, use the Connected banks card’s connect button.
  • In the Add Account dialog, pick Connect your bank instead of the manual form.
  • On an existing account’s Settings or Transactions tab, use its connect button to adopt that account.
  1. Tally opens Stripe’s window, where you find your bank and log in — at the bank itself.
  2. Pick which of your bank’s accounts to share. Back in Tally, choose what each one becomes: a new Tally account, a link to an existing account you’ve been tracking manually, or Don’t sync this account to leave it out.
  3. For an existing account, choose New transactions only (the default — history you’ve already tracked by hand stays as-is) or Full history. Full history on an account you’ve managed manually can double-count transactions you already entered, so Tally warns before you pick it.
  4. Tally runs the first import. For a brand-new synced account with history, Tally can also offer to set the account’s forecast starting balance to the bank’s own reported balance — one click, and skippable.

Syncing is manual and user-initiated: use Sync now on a connected account’s controls. Banks typically post transactions once a day in a batch, and Stripe rate-limits refreshes, so if you sync again right away Tally imports whatever Stripe already holds and tells you when a fresh refresh will be available. Only posted transactions are imported — pending charges that can still change are left alone until they settle.

Imported transactions get a readable name (“Amazon Prime”) derived from the bank’s raw descriptor, with the original statement line kept alongside for reference. Tally automatically matches synced transactions against your existing bills — a confident match marks the bill paid, a plausible one lands in a review queue for you to confirm — and linking one by hand teaches the matcher to auto-reconcile that biller on future syncs.

The dashboard also shows the bank’s own reported balance next to Tally’s computed one, as a cross-check. The forecast never uses the bank’s number — it’s there so you can see whether Tally’s math and your bank agree.

You can connect up to 3 banks (institutions). This is a hard cap on every plan — it bounds the per-connection cost Tally itself pays — and one connected bank can cover several of its accounts (checking and savings at the same bank count once).

Disconnect a bank from the Connected banks card on the Accounts page, or from a connected account’s Settings tab. Disconnecting removes only the connection: the Tally account and every imported transaction stay exactly as they are, and the account simply goes back to manual entry.

Your transaction amounts and descriptions — synced or typed — are encrypted before they’re stored, with a key that only exists while you’re signed in; see the Privacy Policy for the full picture. Tally never sees your bank login, and never receives your account or routing numbers.
